Then and Now
Then and Now features the work of eight South African photographers whose work straddles the transition to democracy. This essay is my contribution to the project.
I was drawn to photography in the early eighties as a means and medium to engage in the project for social and political transition. The sudden transformation, which was a desired result of our efforts, still came unexpectedly early, and caused much self searching as I tried to redefine my role as visual social commentator. These images are a synopsis of the various explorations I engaged in.
